Sous Chef – Concordia Language Villages (Bemidji, MN)

Location: Bemidji, MN
Position Type: Staff | Hourly (Non-Exempt)
Employment Period: Year-round (January–December)
Schedule: Varies (includes evenings and weekends)
Pay Range: $16.73 – $20.10/hour

About Concordia Language Villages

Concordia Language Villages (CLV), a program of Concordia College, brings language and culture to life through immersive experiences in the North Woods of Minnesota. Staff play a key role in creating environments where participants explore global cultures, build language skills, and develop as engaged global citizens.

About the Role

As a Sous Chef, you’ll help create culturally authentic meals that are central to the immersive experience at CLV. This role blends culinary creativity, collaboration with language programs, and team leadership in a dynamic, mission-driven setting.

What You’ll Do

Culinary & Menu Development

  • Collaborate with language communities to design culturally authentic menus
  • Research and develop recipes aligned with program goals and budgets
  • Maintain menu and recipe documentation for ongoing use

Kitchen Operations

  • Prepare, cook, and serve meals in a high-volume environment
  • Manage inventory, ordering, and food waste
  • Ensure compliance with food safety and sanitation standards

Team Leadership

  • Support hiring, scheduling, and supervision of kitchen staff
  • Provide coaching and address performance concerns
  • Assist with training and staff development

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain clean and organized kitchen spaces
  • Support sustainability practices
  • Serve as Summer Camp Chef during peak season

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Relevant experience in culinary, food service, or a related field
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends

Preferred

  • Experience in commercial or quantity cooking environments
  • Experience with menu planning, food ordering, or inventory management
  • Experience leading or supervising others (including student leadership roles, team leads, or similar)
  • Culinary degree, current enrollment in a culinary or hospitality program, or relevant certifications
